Shahrukh Khan , often credited as Shah Rukh Khan and informally referred to as SRK, is an Indian film actor. Often referred to as "The King of Bollywood". Khan has acted in over 70 Hindi films.

 

Khan has won fourteen Filmfare Awards from thirty nominations for his work in Indian films and shares the record for the highest number of Best Actor awards with Dilip Kumar, eight wins. In 2005, the Government of India honoured him with the Padma Shri for his contributions towards Indian cinema.

 

Shah Rukh Khan's father Taj Mohammed Khan was a freedom activist and his mother Lateef Fatima was a magistrate. He moved to Mumbai after his parents' deaths and later married his high school sweetheart Gauri Khan on October 25, 1991.

 

His children are Aryan (born in 1997) and Suhana (born in 2000). Shahrukh graduated from Hansraj College in Delhi and later on completed his Masters in Mass Communications (filmmaking) from Jamiya Miliya Islamiya in Delhi.

 

He did an acting course from Delhi’s Theatre Action Group (TAG), under Barry John, Theatre Director. Shah Rukh’s acting career seriously took off after his role as Abhimanyu Rai in the TV series, Fauji.

 

His debut into Bollywood happened in the year 1992 with the film Deewana with Divya Bharti playing the female lead. The film was a superhit and there was no looking back after this.

 

Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995) starring Shah Rukh Khan, was one of the most successful films at the box office. It grossed over 12 billion rupees, running for over 12 years in Mumbai. SRK hosted the third series of the popular game show Kaun Banega Crorepati in the year 2007.

 

Shah Rukh Khan’s waxwork was unveiled by the actor at Madame Tussauds in London in April, 2007.SRK’s Chak De India (2007) was a roaring success at the box office.

 

So was Om Shanti Om (2007) directed by Farah Khan where SRK starred opposite debutante Deepika Padukone.

 

In 2007 Shah Rukh Khan once again won the Filmfare Best Actor award for his role in Chak De India.In 2008 he anchored Kya Aap Paanchvi Pass Se Tez Hai?, the Indian version of Are You Smarter Than A Fifth Grader?

 

.In 2008, he also dabbled with cricket as the owner of the Kolkata Knight Riders IPL team.Shah Rukh's Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi released on December 12, 2008 and opened to mixed reactions. But the film is a hit as the actor's role has been highly appreciated.

 

After graduating with a Bachelor's degree in economics, he started his career appearing in theatre and several television serials in the late 1980s and later made his Hindi film debut in 1992 with Deewana.

 

Early in his career he was recognised for his unconventional choice of negative roles in films such as Darr (1993), Baazigar (1993) and Anjaam (1994). Since then he has played leading roles in a wide variety of film genres, including romantic films, comedies, thrillers, action and sport films and historical dramas, among others.

Eleven of the films he has acted in have accumulated gross earnings of over INR1 billion (US$19.95 million).[6] Khan's films such as Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge (1995), Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), Devdas (2002), Chak De! India (2007), Om Shanti Om (2007) and Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi (2008) and Ra.One (2011) remain some of Bollywood's biggest hits, while films like Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham... (2001), Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003), Veer-Zaara (2004), Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (2006), My Name Is Khan (2010) and Don 2 (2011) have been top-grossing Indian productions in the overseas markets thus making him one of the most successful leading actors of India.

In addition to movie acting, Khan is a television presenter, a regular stage performer, and a social activist.

 

He is the founder/owner of two production companies: Dreamz Unlimited and Red Chillies Entertainment and, along with actress Juhi Chawla and her husband Jay Mehta, the owner of the Indian Premier League cricket team Kolkata Knight Riders. K

 

Khan is considered to be one of the biggest movie stars, with a fan following claimed to number in the billions.  In 2008, Newsweek named him one of the 50 most powerful people in the world.

 

In 2010, Discovery Travel & Living channel produced a ten-part series titled Living with a Superstar-Shah Rukh Khan . The series was the biggest Indian show on television, with a budget of nearly INR 20 million, highlighting Khan’s daily living, film-making, IPL venture and global lifestyle.

 

In 2006, Khan was one of four Bollywood actors including Priyanka Chopra, Kajol and Hrithik Roshan whose miniature dolls were launched by Spin Master Toys UK under the name of "Bollywood Legends".

 

Khan was invited along with Kajol by NASDAQ to ring their opening bell in New York and thus became the first Indian actors to open the stock market. Khan is also the first actor and the second Indian to have an official Opus dedicated to him.
