Sonali Kulkarni is originally from Pune. Her father is an Engineer, and she has two brothers, Sandeep and Sandesh. She did her schooling at the Abhinav Vidhyalaya in Pune, and later studied political science at Fergusson College, where she majored in Political Science. She is conversant with Hindi, Marathi and English fluently, but has also picked-up Gujarati, Italian, and Tamil. She attended a workshop by Satyadev Dubey and then she and her brother got together to form a theatre group called Samanvay.Sonali made her debut in a Kannada movie titled Cheluvi. She also appeared in one Italian film called Fuoco Si Di Me. This fetched her an award at the 2006 Milan International Film Festival.Sonali also edits Viva a supplement of the Loksatta. She was also seen on TV in the popular dance show Jhalak Dikhla Jaa on Sony.
