The show revolves around the members of a housing society that comes face to face with real life situations - the difference being that they find simple solutions maintaining a positive perspective to life. Jethalaal is a businessman who is not educated and he lives with his wife and son Tapu at Gokuldham Co-operative Society. He's constantly worried about his son's mischievous behaviour so he brings his father Champaklal to stay with them. He hopes that the grandfather will have a stabilising influence on Tapu. The situations are portrayed as though seen through the eyes of Taarak Mehta, a journalist. With people from different cultures and walks of life staying together in the same compound and so many things happening in their lives, there's a lot of scope for humour when everything's seen through Taarak's ooltah chashmah.
