Naina (Preity Zinta) is a very serious woman living with her mother, grandmother and sister in the USA. She is generally quite irritated with life as her father had committed suicide while her grandmother treats her mother quite badly. Things change when Aman (Shah Rukh Khan) comes to live in the neighbourhood. She learns to laugh and falls in love with him. But he keeps her at arms' length and encourages her to get serious with her friend Rohit (Saif Ali Khan). The reason for his strange behaviour is brought to light towards the end of the film.
