Om Prakash Makhija (Shah Rukh Khan) dreams of becoming a star and his mother encourages him no end. His friend Pappu (Shreyas Talpade) also believes that Om has the makings of a great actor. Moreover, Om is in love with his idol, the great heroine of those times, Shantipriya (Deepika Padukone). He has great visions of becoming a hero and acting with her in all her films. One day, he follows her into the film set of a house. Without meaning to, Om becomes privy to a conversation between Shantipriya and Mukesh (Arjun Rampal), a film director. He's shocked to find out that the two are secretly married and that Shantipriya is expecting Mukesh's child. Becoming a father does not suit Mukesh's plans at all and in a fit of anger, he sets the house on fire after locking his wife in. Sadly for Om, he's also trapped in the film set and burns to death along with the woman of his dreams. The second half of the film is about Om Kapoor (Shah Rukh Khan), the present day superstar of Bollywood. He's rich, born into a family of filmstars and is the heartthrob of millions of fans. The day he receives an award for best actor, he recalls a scene from his earlier birth, when he pretends to accept an award and gives a speech in front of his friend, Pappu. By and by, Om Kapoor remembers his earlier life and goes in search of his mother and friend. Then happens the entry of Mukesh aka Mike, who's just come back from the USA to sign Om Kapoor in his next film. Not surprisingly, a new heroine is chosen by the name of Sandi (Deepika Padukone) who is an exact replica of Shantipriya. The stage is set for revenge while Om Kapoor has but one chance to get back at the man who had killed him before - not just him but also his dreams.
