Eddie (Paul Newman) used to be a pool hustler and had been forced out of circulation by gangsters. When he meets the young pool player Vincent (Tom Cruise), Eddie is happy to note that Vincent is a younger version of himself. Eddie offers to teach Vincent how to be a hustler. Hesitant to begin with, Vincent accepts his offer. Eddie takes Vincent and his girlfriend Carmen (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio) on a tour around the country to work the pool halls. The only trouble is Vincent is a show off and this warns off the other players, making him lose money. Will Eddie be able to keep his cool?
