Killing Them Softly is based on the 1974 novel Cogan's Trade by George V. Higgins. Jackie Cogan played by Brad Pitt is a point man (a person who patrols ahead) for a hitman. Cogan begins investigation on a heist that went down during a mob-protected poker game.
