The Uprising of 1857 was a wake up call for the East India Company. Fearing further rebellion, the Company rule was dissolved giving way to direct British rule being imposed on India. The Government, headed by the British, took complete control of administration.

It was this unjust method of administration that fuelled further animosity among the Indians against their foreign rulers. A new breed of educated class emerged, who paved way for the Indian National Freedom Movement.
