Malaysian billionaire Jho Low goes shopping on looted money

Financier Low Taek Jho has been in the news over the last few months mostly for all the wrong reasons. Famously known as Jho Low, he is has been accused of stealing $4.5 billion from 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) which is a Malaysian government investment fund. Reportedly, Low is in China and has denied any wrong doing. But stealing $4.5 billion! That’s a lot of money bro. But this is Jho Low and he had a solid plan on how he was going to spend it and the things he bought will blow your mind.

The US government seized a bunch of items that belong to the financer, like artwork worth $200 million including a $173 million Picasso drawing and two Claude Monet paintings, a yacht, a see-through grand piano, an original Monet and much much more. Reportedly, Low bought more than 12 properties including the Viceroy L'Ermitage Beverly Hills hotel in California, a mansion in Beverly Hills worth $17.5 million and a $31 million condominium at the Time Warner Center in New York City.

A yacht, named Equanimity, worth $250 million was seized by FBI this year in Bali. Joh Low also bought a 22-carat pink diamond necklace for Najib's wife, Rosmah Mansor. It is said that $100 million was used to back several films in Hollywood like The Wolf of Wall Street, Dumb and Dumber To and Daddy's Home. In 2014, the financer also gifted a see-through acrylic grand piano to supermodel Miranda Kerr. The model was also given a pair of 11-carat diamond earrings and a nearly 12-carat diamond-shaped heart. The money was not just spent on the model, but also on the actor Leonardo DiCaprio. The Titanic star was gifted a Picasso painting named Nature Morte au Crâne de Taureau.

Former Prime Minister Najib Razak, the one who founded 1MDB in 2009, is himself facing nearly 40 money laundering and corruption charges. Like Jho Low, he too has denied any wrongdoing.

Phew! That’s just too much money to count…
