Bollywood for most part of its existence has portrayed the image of secularism and peace by accepting talent from all races, religion and backgrounds. However, from time to time its mettle gets tested by miscreants attempting to paint the industry with religious slurs. The latest to fall victim to it was Aamir Khan. The actor had earlier said that he is planning to work on his dream project Mahabharat. This news though not entirely confirmed has already invited anti-secular views on social media.
The tweet attacked Aamir for daring to play the role of a Hindu god. The profile accused the actor who is a practicing Muslim to be blasphemous for taking on the role. This however comes when there have been no confirmed reports of the actor actually acting in the film.
Why should @AamirKhan, a Muslim, play in most ancient & sacred of Hindu epics, the Mahabharata? Is @BJP4India Govt of @narendramodi going to be like the @INCIndia & just stand by in name of secularism??? Would Muslims allow a Hindu to play life of Mohamed?https://t.co/fC7bvbHkZE— Francois Gautier (@fgautier26) March 21, 2018
You scoundrel, have you not seen peter brooks production of this great epic Mahabharsta in France . I would like to know which foreign agency is paying you to spread this kind of perverse and poisonous thoughts in our country— Javed Akhtar (@Javedakhtarjadu) March 21, 2018
You ignorant unfortunate imbecile, obviously you know nothing about our Indian traditions and culture . Do you know who were Ras khan bullay shah Waris shah, ,Baba Farid Nazeer Akbarabadi , Nizir Banarasi , Bismillah khan . You are just a frog in the stinking well of communalism— Javed Akhtar (@Javedakhtarjadu) March 22, 2018
The tweet was quickly shut down by Bollywood’s veteran writer Javed Akhtar. Akhtar was sure to share his piece of mind, highlighting the lowly thought behind the tweet. He even retorted to abusive words. While this was a rather unusual show from the usually taciturn writer, he seemed determined to fight off such sentiments aimed to taint the industry.
If know them they won’t allow even a Muslim . Have you decided to emulate them .— Javed Akhtar (@Javedakhtarjadu) March 22, 2018
Why does his opinion even matter. Aamir Khan is a responsible actor & even more evolved human-being. The same unfortunately does not hold true for @fgautier26 an imported reject who is a vile old sad man desperately seeking attention by stirring trouble!!— Batull (@BatullT) March 21, 2018
Have you watched the iconic 1983 film Jaane Bhi do Yaaron? Complete 'mocking' of epics; no problem then. But when Hirani- Joshi Hindu combine write PK & Aamir acts -- suddenly Aamir becomes anti Hindu ! 😡.Aamir has read the MB epic through two decades.1/2— Reader (@Southtownsue) March 22, 2018
I personally don't have an issue if a Hindu portrays Mohammed as far as the context and interpretation is correct!— Haiderrrr (@haidersrk) March 22, 2018
Javed’s words were cheered by other Twitter users. They seemed tired over religious semantics brandishing Bollywood. Some users even went back to dissing Aamir for mocking Hinduism in PK. But the thoughts over all were in tune with Akhtar’s.
After Padmaavat’s heightened protest against its release, Bollywood seems to be on its toes to shut down any baseless negative thoughts about its film.
