When election season descends over parts of India, everything in the air wants you to vote in the name of democracy. As Bareilly gears up for its Municipal election this year, scrutiny of the voter list by one eager candidate revealed presence of Priyanka Chopra’s name in the list, 17 years after she had shifted from the city. Chopra shifted to Mumbai after winning the Miss World title in 2000 but she along with her parents remain registered voters.
While it is a matter of pride for the residents of Bareilly to still have Priyanka Chopra on the voter’s list, the election office was embarrassed when their fault was pointed out. "It was a mistake on the part of the block-level officer concerned, who prepared the fresh electoral roll for this election. We will take action against those responsible for this error," said the Assistant district election officer Abhijit Mukherji.
The mistake was pointed out by Rajan Saxena, whose brother Saurabh Saxena was contesting for the councillor's post in Bareilly Municipal Corporation when they came across the error. As they scrutinized the list in hopes of increasing their vote base by making individual calls to voters, Priyanka’s name popped up.
"She was our neighbour here before shifting to Mumbai in 2000. Seeing her name in the voters' list was such a pleasant surprise. Since her family and she shifted to Mumbai, they have frequently visited Bareilly. However, the last time she herself visited was around four years ago," Rajan said.
While the election office remains baffled over the 17-year-old error, this prospective contestant will write to Priyanka in hope of getting her vote. “As Chopra is one of my prospective voters, I will definitely approach her through Twitter and request her to come and cast her vote. It is not only our constitutional right but also a duty to cast our vote," Saurabh told Times of India.Nothing helps more than star backup when contesting elections. No matter how small they may be.
