As Pongal advances in Tamil Nadu, Kollywood is getting ready for some of its biggest releases. The festival promises to be exciting for Tamil cinema, as the weekend starts on 12 January with a series of holidays lined up till January 17. The box-office is expected to be busy thanks to the star-driven films like Suriya’s Thaanaa Serndha Koottam, Vikram’s Sketch, Prabhu Deva’s Gulaebaghavali, multi-starrer Kalakalappu 2 and Vijaykanth’s son Shanmughapandian’s Madura Veeran.
The biggest of the lot is Suriya’s Thaanaa Serndha Koottam. The heist comedy entertainer produced by Studio Green and KE Gnanavelraja is based on Akshay Kumar’s Special 26. Directed by Vignesh Sivan, the film's music has been composed by Anirudh. The supporting cast comprises veteran actor Karthik, Ramya Krishnan, Keerthi Suresh and others.
Vikram and Tamannaah Bhatia's action entertainer Sketch is also lined up and has been directed by Vijay Chander. Gulaebaghavali has Prabhu Deva making a comeback as a hero after his last flop Devi. The movie stars Hansika, who was launched in Tamil cinema by Prabhudeva. The film directed by Kalyaan is said to be a musical love story with the score by Vivek-Mervin.
Kalakalappu 2 is a slapstick comedy and a sequel to the first part, which was released in 2012. Directed by Sundar C, the movie has an ensemble cast comprising of Jiiva, Jai, Siva, Nikki Galrani and Catherine Tressa. The music has been composed by Hip Hop Thamizha. Madura Veeran, on the other hand, is a rural mass entertainer based on Jallikattu and will see Vijaykanth’s son Shanmughapandian. The film has been directed by PG Muthiah and has Meenakshi as the female lead along with Samuthirakani, Vela Ramamurthy Mime Gopi in supporting roles.This Pongal, fans will definitely be spoilt for choice and the box office waiting to rake in the big bucks.
