Ajay Devgn starrer Raid raised hopes of the star coming back to the screen in his most comfortable form, as an honest official fighting corruption. The movie ticked off all the crucial boxes for a box office hit but critic reviews was one place it did not win. However, that does not seem to have stopped the film from making records.
Raid released last week on March 15 and it received a good box office opening at Rs 41 crore. Now it seems, the movie is going beyond just a good collection. The film is set to become the second highest grossing film based on opening weekend after Padmaavat. On Monday alone the movie recorded Rs 6 crore taking its collection to Rs 47.27 crore.
Critics may have not showered Raid with their stars but the audiences are liking it as is evident from its box office collection. Another reason for the movie to be doing well can be contributed to the fact that it had very little competition at the box office apart from Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety. Nevertheless, the fighting corruption protagonist card seems to have worked well for Devgn after his hits, Gangaajal and Singham series.
The movie is based on an original story of the longest Income Tax raid that took place in Lucknow in 1980s. It also stars Ileana D’Cruz and Saurabh Shukla with Devgn playing Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer Amay Patnaik. The movie helmed by Raj Kumar Gupta whose 2008 drama Aamir won him critical acclaim, shows that moviegoers are still relating to the honest official corrupt public figure drama.
