Veteran actor and filmmaker Lekh Tandon passed away on Sunday evening at his house in Powai in suburban Mumbai. He was 88 years old. According to the Indian Express the exact reason for his death is yet to be confirmed. A versatile film professional, Lekh was known to act and direct in various Bollywood movies and TV serials over the last two decades.
Born and brought up in Mumbai, Lekh’s father Faqeer Chand Tandon, had studied with Pritviraj Kapoor during his school days at the Khalsa High School in Punjab. It was Kapoor who inspired Lekh to join the Bollywood industry. He started his career as an assistant director for Hindi movies and soon became a full-time director.
He has worked and acted in several hits on the silver screen including films like Swades, Rang De Basanti, Chennai Express and Chaarfutiya Chhokare. When it came to the small screen, he was credited with super hits which include discovering Shah Rukh Khan for his TV series Dil Dariya.
Lekh Tandon was also the proud recipient of the 1978 Filmfare Best Screenplay Award for his movie Dulhan Wahi Jo Piya Man Bhaye which he shared with Vrajendra Gaur and Madhusudan Kalekar. If that’s not all, his biopic Amrapali staring Sanajy Dutt and Vyjayantimala was India’s Submission to the 39th academy award for best foreign language film.
Several Bollywood personalities took to social media to mourn Tandon's death.
