Ajay Devgn and comedy make for a blockbuster combination; will Total Dhamaal follow the league?
The powerhouse performer, Ajay Devgn has carved a niche for himself as the angry young man of Bollywood, and no prizes for guessing why! Right from playing a badass gangster in films like Company, Once Upon A Time in Mumbai to acing his ‘khakee’ look in films like Singham, Gangaajal, Raid and more. We also have classics like Omkara, Drishyam and Rajneeti to Devgn's credit. Well, most of these films have been acclaimed both critically and publicly, however, they don’t always guarantee a good Box Office number. But there comes a genre that defies all the limits and logic and is loved by all. We are talking about ‘Comedy’ and, surprisingly, Devgn has had a streak of blockbusters in this particular genre.
Let’s start with one of the most successful comedy franchise that also happens to be a part of Ajay Devgn’s filmography –the Golmaal series. Ajay Devgn, who is otherwise into very serious characters, experimented by stepping in Gopal’s shoe and the rest is history. Be it Golmaal: Fun Unlimited, Golmaal Returns or Golmaal 3, all the three films have worked well at the Box Office with a good word of mouth. Apart from the Golmaal series, Devgn has also been a part of super-entertaining films like Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge, Bol Bachchan and All The Best and these films have managed to rake in some big money. On the other side, some of his recent releases like Raid, Baadshaho, Shivaay couldn’t really create havoc at the Box Office. So, do we conclude that Ajay Devgn is rather loved for comic avatar than that of a macho man?
Having said that, after the experience low BO collections with Baadshaho and Shivaay, Ajay Devgn is back to this genre of humor with his forthcoming release – Total Dhamaal. The trailer of the same has made its way to the internet on January 21 and it’s a laughter riot! Right from hilarious punchlines to a grand VFX affair and an ensemble casting, this film has the recipe of a super hit. However, the Box Office is an unpredictable place.
Total Dhamaal also stars Madhuri Dixit, Anil Kapoor, Riteish Deshmukh, Arshad Warsi and Jaaved Jaafery in pivotal roles. Directed by Indra Kumar, the film is all set to hit the big screens on February 22, 2019.
