Another Diwali. Another Golmaal film by director Rohit Shetty. The Ajay Devgn starrer is one of the longest running franchise in the history of Indian cinema. After ‘Golmaal: Fun Unlimited’ (2006), Golmaal Returns (2008) and Golmaal 3 (2010), ‘Golmaal Again’ is the fourth in the series waiting for yet another Diwali release. While shooting for the title track, a reprised version of the original from 2006, at Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad Rohit Shetty took some time out to talk to us, “This is the last sched of the film. We started in Mumbai and then came here [Ramoji Film City] then in month of May we were in Goa.” The tradition of shooting in Goa remains intact for Shetty and so do the colourful cars. We are guessing these are either going to be blown up or crashed into things at some point. One must admit that ‘different’ is just too cliché for a Rohit Shetty film.
“Obviously the scale has to go higher, it has been seven years since we made the last Golmaal,” he said. Yes that long because “two years went in the struggle to get my film rights back to my company.”
But looks like it all paid off as the trailer set the record on the very first day garnering over 20 million views. In fact the trailer which is predictably full of pomp and show has a glimpse of Shetty riding the car for Arshad Warsi’s entry, while Tabu is the only one who walks like a boss while cars encircle her. “We have tried to make this bigger and better, that is what every director claims and that is what I will also claim," said Shetty.
Bigger? May be. But better? We don't quite agree. In Golmaal Again Ajay Devgn is seen balancing himself on two bikes, similar to his opening scene in the first part ‘Golmaal: Fun Unlimted’. A tribute to his debut stunt in his debut film ‘Phool Aur Kante’ (1991). Also the first film for Rohit Shetty where he was an Assistant Director.
The friendship with Ajay Devgn goes back to that time, “I think he is the best friend anybody could have, best human being or support system any person can have.” Although according to him people are lucky they haven’t seen the real Ajay Devgn because in past 10-12 years he has really calmed down, “He was a wild guy!” who smokes a lot which even his best bud admits is his most annoying habit.
Nonetheless, it has been a long a journey since both of them hail from an action director’s family, been part of the same movies for more than two decades, “there is a lot of comfort zone and there is a lot of respect for each other, there is a lot of trust to know what he can do and he knows what I can pull off. So it is a very different kind of relationship which is rare in today’s world. “
However, after visiting his extravagant set, the man truly commands love with fun as the general atmosphere around him be it stars, dancers, junior artists, the action team or the production crew. It’s all like a holiday. The movie released on October 19th and stars Ajay Devgn, Arshad Warsi, Tusshar Kapoor, Shreyas Talpade, Johnny Lever, Sanjay Mishra and Kunal Kemmu from the previous film while Tabu and Parineeti Chopra are the new entrants along with Neil Nitin Mukesh and Prakash Raj.
