Fatima Sana Shaikh on facing sexual abuse: Don't want to expose that side of my life
Actor Fatima Sana Shaikh who also faced sexual abuse among many others in Bollywood, says she would like to keep it to herself.
In 2018, the #metoo movement that transcended down to Bollywood among other industries opened a can of worms. Women in large numbers opened up on horrific instances of abuse they had to undergo. The #metoo movement also brought to light big names such as Sajid Khan, Nana Patekar, Alok Nath and more, sending a shockwave through the industry. The movement was also an eye-opener on how women are often demanded to keep their sufferings to themselves. But at the same time, not everyone chose to share their accounts of abuse. One such is actor Fatima Sana Shaikh.
Fatima, who has been subject to sexual abuse as well, said she did not want to divulge details around it and would like to be left unjudged for her decision. "I don’t want to expose that side of my life, I’m dealing with it, speaking to people I’m close to. Just like I won’t judge those who want to share their horror stories, I expect not to be judged for not sharing mine," Fatima said while talking to Mumbai Mirror.

She acknowledges the bright side of #metoo movement, though. It has served its purpose by scaring the predators who will now think twice before repeating their actions as it would now lead to public shaming. "Now sexual predators are scared of being shamed in public and shunned by the industry. For so many years we had normalised assault to such an extent that women come to accept abuse as something that was normal," she added.
Fatima, who rose to fame with Dangal, last appeared in Thugs Of Hindostan, a multi starrer that did not succeed at the box office. She says the failure deeply affected her. "We were all disturbed, we had worked on the film for a-year-and-a-half," she said, but added that she did not regret being a part of the film.
In her next project, Fatima will be part of a crime drama alongside Rajkummar Rao and a horror comedy also starring Saif Ali Khan.
