Filmfare Awards are the oldest award in the history of the Indian film industry. The first on the list has to be the writer, lyricist, and filmmaker Gulzar. He has won as many as 20 Filmfare awards in a career that spans 58 years. Gulzar has won 4 Best Dialogue awards for films like Anand, Namak Haraam, Maachis and Saathiya. For movies like Gharaonda, Gol Maal, Thodisi Bewafaii, Masoom, Ijaazat, Lekin, Dil Se, Saathiya, Bunty Aur Babli, Ishqiya and Jab Tak Hai Jaan, he has won the Best Lyricist. His movie, Aandhi won Best Movie (Critics) and Gulzar received Best Director award for the movie Mausam. The filmmaker’s documentary on Amjad Ali Khan won the Best Documentary award at Filmfare. Gulzar won the award for Best Story for the movie Maachis and the list of 20 wins ends at a Lifetime Achievement Award.
After Gulzar, the next in the list is megastar Amitabh Bachchan with 15 Filmfare trophies. He has won five Best Actor awards for movies like Amar Akbar Anthony, Don, Hum, Black and Paa. 3 Best Actor (Critics) for movies like Aks, Black and Piku and 3 Best Supporting Actor awards for films like Anand, Namak Haraam and Mohabbatein. In the year 2000, the megastar won Superstar of the Millennium. In 2003, he was awarded the Filmfare Power Award and in 2011, the actor was honoured with a Filmfare Special Award for completing 40 years in the film industry. Well, Big B (in 1990) won Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award too.
Shah Rukh Khan
Shah Rukh Khan is at an equal footing with Big B. He, too, has won 15 Filmfare awards including 8 Best Actor awards (Baazigar, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Dil To Pagal Hai, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Devdas, Swades, Chak De India, My Name Is Khan), 2 Best Actor Critics (Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa, Mohabbatein), 2 Power Awards in the year 2004 and 2005, one Best Villain (Anjaam), Best Debut (Deewana) and Special Award Swiss Consulate Trophy in 2002.
After the writer, filmmaker and actors let’s talk about a musician now. AR Rahman has also taken 15 Filmfare trophies home. He won his first Filmfare in 1995, the Filmfare RD Burman Award for New Music Talent and then there was no looking back for him. He went on to win 10 awards for Best Music in movies like Rangeela, Dil Se, Taal, Lagaan, Saathiya, Rang de Basanti, Guru, Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na, Delhi 6 and Rockstar. 4 for Best Background Score in films like The Legend of Bhagat Singh, Swades, Guru and Jodhaa Akbar.
The first lady in this list is the very talented Jaya Bachchan. The veteran actress has won three Best Actress awards for her performances in movies like Abhimaan, Kora Kagaz and Nauker. Even as a Supporting Actress, Jaya Bachchan left a mark at Filmfare with three wins for movies like Fiza, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham and Kal Ho Naa Ho. She won the Filmfare Special Award twice for the films like Uphaar and Hazaar Chaurasi Ki Maa. In 2007, the Guddi actress was awarded the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award.
Actors, actresses, filmmakers and musicians have been in this list, so how can a singer be behind? Asha Bhosle has picked up 9 Filmfare trophies. She won 7 awards for her wonderful voice in songs like Garibon ki Suno, Parde Mein Rehne Do, Piya Tu Ab To Aaja, Dum Maro Dum, Hone Lagi Hain Raat, Chain Se Humko Kabhi and Yeh Mera Dil. In 1996, she won a Special Award for her songs in Rangeela and in 2001, she was honoured with the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award.
Our list ends with a choreographer and she is none other than Saroj Khan. She has won eight Filmfare Awards for her choreography in movies like Tezaab, Chaalbaaz, Sailaab, Beta, Khalnayak, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Devdas and Guru.
