Padman is about to hit the screens and it seems Akshay Kumar doesn't want to waste any time in getting his fans excited for his next. The teaser of Reema Kagti’s Gold is out! The film, which will release on Independence Day, is a fictional story, however, it is loosely based on hockey player Balbir Singh, who helped India clench its first medal in the Olympics as a free nation in 1948.
Contrary to popular belief, the movie is not a biopic, but based on real events from post-independent India. “It is not a biopic. It is a completely fictional story but it is set against a real backdrop between 1933-48 India about what the country was, the sports... About hockey. It is not based on any character," the film’s producer Ritesh Sidhwani had earlier told PTI.
Akshay is not playing the role of Singh, but will essay the role of the manager of the team. Though a fictional story, Gold does take inspiration from the life of Singh. “We have set it in real events so people (often) confuse it with a biopic. It talks about the era in which we achieved Independence and what happened with sports, (primarily) hockey at that time. It is not about a particular character and Akshay is not even playing (hockey in the film). He plays the manager," Sidhwani added.
This will also mark the debut of TV actor Mouni Roy, who is famous for her role in the hit serial Naagin.
Akshay seems to be on a high as the entire film industry is pouring in to support the cause that Padman propagates. Team Padman started the Padman challenge where the cast of the film took a picture with a sanitary pad in their hand and shared it on social media, beginning with Akshay Kumar, Radhika Apte, Sonam Kapoor and producer Twinkle Khanna. Soon, many followed, namely – Deepika Padukone, Alia Bhatt, Shabana Azmi, Aamir Khan, Arjun Kapoor, among others.Gold, which is co-produced by Farhan Akhtar under the banner of Excel Entertainment, will release on August 15, 2018.
