Parineeti Chopra is finally smiling. The actress who had been struggling with her box office releases for the last couple of years has finally delivered the hit she was looking for. On her 29th birthday, Chopra's Golmaal Again had already made 58 crore net at the domestic box office. Making it the biggest hit of 2017.
Having said that the fact that Golmaal Again is one of the most successful and longest-running film franchise has certainly helped Chopra's cause who despite being a Yash Raj Film talent failed to give any hits post-Ishaqzade in 2012. All her releases post-Ishaqzade didn't work out.
Shuddh Desi Romance, Hasee Toh Phasee, Daawat E Ishq and Kill Dil were all huge flops at the box office.
Post-Kill Dil, Chopra took a two-year sabbatical to take a fresh look at her dwindling career. She lost a lot of weight and did a cameo in Varun Dhawan's Dishoom in 2016. The weight loss program, however, didn't quite work for her with her comeback film Meri Pyaari Bindu also biting the dust at the box office in early 2017. All her hopes were now on Golmaal Again, a multi-starrer that also caters to the star status of fringe actors like Tushar Kapoor, Kunal Khemu, and Shreyas Talpade.
And that is perhaps where the problem lies. There is no doubt that the Golmaal series is a rather successful one but it does little for actors once the film has completed its run at the box office. Except, maybe, creating a stereotype that's hard to break unless you are a star and a performer like Ajay Devgan.Parineeti, it seems, has taken the easy route to stardom. And while Golmaal will cross the 100 crore mark, we aren't so sure if the film will ensure a happy year ahead for Chopra.
