It's Halloween and the scariest it gets at a theater near you is Golmaal Again. Not fair for the regulars at the scare fare. Now Bollywood doesn't really excel at spooky films. Horror is genre that has mostly been run by two Rams. Ram Gopal Varma and the Ramsey Brothers. However, every now and then a film comes along and scares the bejesus out of us. Here's our list of top five Bollywood horror flicks.
1. Raat (1992)
Ram Gopal Varma's finest film in the genre. Raat isn't over the top. It's scary because it has a common setting. No haunted house, no tantric, no chudail or Kabristan. Just a pretty girl from a middle class family with a problem that not many can wrap their brains around. Though she does know how to wrap her fingers around people when they aren't looking. Also after you watch this cult classic, you will never look at cats the same way.2. Bhoot (2003)
Another Ram Gopal Varma classic and this one starring Ajay Devgan and Urmila has us dying in anticipation of the ghost for the longest period of time. It comes to a point where one starts to believe that it's probably a thriller and not a horror film. Varma hits you just when you're getting comfortable in your seats. It has some wonderful scream-out-loud moments. Just what the doctor ordered when it comes to date flicks.3. Horror Story (2013)
This one gets a bit old school. A group of youngsters shack up for the night at a haunted hotel. Things get convoluted and it's a scare fest thereon. There are some genuinely frightening scenes here but this whole business of checking into a haunted hotel is a bit too much to take.4. 13 B (2009)
R Madhavan's 13B is a hammer blow to all those looking for real chills. It's full of spine-tingling chills and scares. The film doesn't depend on a scary background score or weird camera angles to deliver. With a strong script and another modern take at the supernatural, 13 B is definitely a film that you shouldn't be missing.5. Ragini MMS (2011)
There's a saying in Hindi, nakal ke liye akal ki a zaroorat hoti hai (you need to be clever while copying from others). Ragini MMS, inspired by Paranormal Activity is just that kind of a film. This one, unlike the second film in the franchise, didn't star Sunny Leone and still managed to attract crowds to the movie hall. This sleeper hit can give many sleepless hours.
