Over the years, cancer has been one such battle where one has to deal with the ulterior pressures that come with it. In recent times, we have seen two extremely powerful ladies fight the deadly 'C'. These ladies have not only battled these disease with so much nerve but have also shown us how going bald and flaunting surgery scars is the 'new normal’. We are talking about Sonali Bendre and Tahira Kashyap, who have made us bow down to them with reverence on this International Women’s Day.
Sonali has been dealing with her metastatic cancer like a true warrior. More than anything, it’s her super cool attitude of laughing it off that fills us with so much hope. The actor was diagnosed with the disease in July 2018 and she took to social media to share the heartbreaking news with her fans. She then went to the US for her treatment and post a long and tiring battle with the disease, she is now back in India, all healthy. Just recently, she graced the cover of Vogue India’s March edition and totally aced the bald look. In an interview with the magazine, she shared how her first reaction after learning about her diagnosis was ‘to hide it’. "I thought my ‘brand’ is over, all along I had been endorsing healthy eating and health-focused products, and suddenly it was all gone. It was only when my oncologist said that I had fourth-stage cancer and a 30% chance that my whole world view changed. Suddenly I didn’t see any reason not to talk about it. I had done nothing wrong; it was not my fault I had cancer, so why was I hiding it?” she said.

The idea was almost preposterous. An almost bald head, barely any make-up and a huge scar was not the norm for @vogue. But, I guess that's my new normal. Of course I had my reservations, and, if I dare say, insecurities - but a candid conversation with the lovely ladies @priya_tanna and @anaitashroffadajania cleared my doubts. And before I knew it, I was standing in front of the camera, ready to uncover my new reality. The icing on the cake was the fact that I needed one-third of the time for hair and make-up😄. So I closed my eyes and jumped into it, full throttle, and this is the result. Thank you, @meghamahindru for telling my story; and thank you @ridburman for understanding my story and saying it so beautifully through your lens. If there's a piece of advice I can give you all after this, it would be to 'Find your new normal'. It's very liberating. Ayushmann Khurrana’s wife Tahira, on the other side, shared her piece of news in September 2018 through a social media post. She shared that she was detected with DCIS (ductal carcinoma in situ) in her right breast with high-grade malignant cells. She returned to work after mastectomy in November. On World Cancer Day 2019, Tahira shared an awe-inspiring picture of herself. It was a bare-back photograph of hers, which also showed her scar above her waist, suggesting the removal of her left breast. Along with it, she also penned an inspiring note for her fans.

Today is my day! Wish you all a happy #worldcancerday and hope each one of us celebrates this day in an embracing way. That we remove any stigma or taboo associated with it. That we spread awareness about it and that we have self love no matter what. I truly embrace all my scars as they are my badges of honour. There is nothing known as perfect. Happiness lies in truly accepting yourself. This was a tough one for me. But this picture was my decision as I want to celebrate not the disease but the spirit with which I endured. To quote my mentor, Diasaku Ikeda, “Leading an undefeated life is eternal victory. Not being defeated, never giving up, is actually a greater victory than winning, not being defeated means having the courage to rise to the challenge. However many times we’re knocked down, the important thing is we keep getting up and taking one step-even a half step- forward” #worldcancerday #breastcancerawareness #breastcancerwarrior #turningkarmaintomission #boddhisatva Thanks @atulkasbekar for this one❤️
