Is October a toned down version of Ae Dil Hai Mushkil?
Director Shoojit Sircar, along with actors Varun Dhawan and Banita Sandhu launched the trailer for the film, October on Monday and the two-minute clip gives us a look into the life of Dan, played by Dhawan. His character plays a hotel management understudy doing menial jobs before the story takes a turn only to have him rush to the ICU whenever he’s not working. Through the trailer we see Dan trying to find out if Banita ever liked him. But October is not a love story, it is a story about love. Confused? Let’s go back two years.
Remember Ae Dil Hai Mushkil? Ayan (Ranbir Kapoor) and Alizeh (Anushka Sharma) get close to each other and even break up with their lovers. While Ayan develops feelings for Alizeh, the latter cannot see him as anything beyond a friend. Alizeh makes up with her ex and they decide to get married. Ayan attends the wedding, reveals his feeling and is rejected. He then begins dating Saba (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan) but breaks up with her when he finds out Alizeh is single. Of course, they could never get to be more than friends. Now that your memory’s refreshed, watch the trailer for Ae Dil Hai Mushkil.
Now doesn’t it sound similar? ADHM is a story about love, just like October. Except we have a big star cast and foreign locations. Ayan even has a private jet to ferry him wherever he wants and whenever he wants. Saba is a rich poetess, and her ex-husband Tahir (Shah Rukh Khan) owns a gallery and well… he’s rich too. In October however, we see Dan playing a hotel management graduate who’s after one of his classmates. He too seems to find himself in a similar position as Ayan from ADHM. Except he isn’t rich, at least not in the trailer.
In ADHM, Alizeh falls terminally ill and seems like she has very little time left. October too features the female lead Banita Sandhu in a similar situation. While the trailer for ADHM easily tells us that it is a film on unrequited love, we will have to wait and see if October too is about something similar?
It seems like director Shoojit Sircar has made a similar film albeit with a lesser budget. While ADHM reportedly had a budget of Rs 80 crores, October’s budget is reported to be half that at around Rs 40 crores. Shoojit and Karan Johar tell love stories differently but we’re wondering is October be like old wine in a new bottle?
