Bollywood's most illustrious banner is struggling at the box office. It all started with Shahrukh Khan's Fan and has continued with films like Meri Pyaari Bindu, Qaidi Band, and Bank Chor. Even Aditya Chopra couldn't save the situation with Ranveer Singh's Befikre.
So what are the big wigs at the biggest independent production house in India thinking? Reports say that Yash Raj won't be working with newbies till further notice. In a meeting headed by Aditya Chopra and Rani Mukherjee, it has been decided that the production house will now be working with stars only and is even looking to rope in Akshay Kumar for a project that Aditya Chopra could also direct.
For years now YRF has only paid a fraction of the market price to the stars and other actors. All because a film with YRF meant a lot in the industry and would often mean more work for the newcomer. With half a dozen flops all that has clearly changed.
The production house has also announced Sui Dhaga recently with Varun Dhawan and Anushka Sharma in the lead. While the film is slated for a 2018 release, Aamir Khan and Salman Khan are the only big guns left in the banner's arsenal this year with films like Thugs of Hindustan and Tiger Zinda hai respectively.
Surprisingly the actors under contract with the production house have delivered hits while working with other banners. Ayushmann Khurrana (Baraily Ki Barfi, Shubh Mangal Savdhan), Bhumi Pednekar (Toilet: Ek Prem Katha, Shubh Mangal Savdhan) and Arjun Kapoor (Mubarakan) have all delivered hits. Is there something wrong with the scripts that are being passed at YRF? Should Aditya Chopra look at that direction then? Because we aren't sure if getting away from fresh talent is going to help.
