Joining stars like Aamir Khan, Alia Bhatt, Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone among others is Jacqueline Fernandez took up the Pad Man Challenge and posted herself holding a sanitary pad promoting Akshay Kumar's Friday-released film PadMan. She posted a picture of herself on her social media account holding a pad and wrote “Promote the Pad” with a lipstick on it. The phrase immediately caught huge criticism from the netizens who slammed the Kick actress left, right and center for wasting the pad while a few others noted that she was posting the picture for publicity.
The 32-year-old Race 2 actress took up the PadMan Challenge and tried to be thoughtful while doing so. She wrote the phrase with lipstick or a red marker to make it look like a blood-stained pad in an attempt to destigmatize menstruation. However, her actions didn’t go down well with millions of her followers on social media as they urged her to donate it to the needy people who are in villages. Infuriated users tried to explain to her that the PadMan team had thrown a marketing gimmick and has nothing to do with the social issue or women's empowerment. "It's only drama and commercial no one cares shame on Bollywood for wasting so many pads which could have been used by someone else," a user commented on her post.
"You just wasted one pad and are urging others to do the same. I wish you had used some brains and promoted this campaign a bit more sensibly," said another.
A few days back, Twinkle Khanna too took up the challenge. However, few netizens questioned her hypocrisy and asked why she is only talking about the cause when her film is set to release. “This is an epic example of how celebrities can do anything to promote their Film. Where were you ma'am? Why this so called awareness only before your own produced movie? Hypocrisy at its best form,” wrote an internet user.
But, Twinkle Khanna was quick to give the netizen a stern reply in her characteristic witty style and wrote, “In 2015 I started writing about menstruation in my columns, 2016 I wrote about @murugaofficial in my book and 2018 I am producing Pad Man -just to bring the timeline into perspective for people who look for the negative in every initiative! #PadManTalks (sic).”
Apart from Bollywood celebs, several TV celebs like Mouni Roy, Sanjeeda Sheikh, Aashka Goradia, Ekta Kapoor, Karan Patel and many others too have taken up the challenge. Akshay Kumar’s PadMan traces the life of Arunachalam Muruganantham, who invented the revolutionary low-cost pad making machine in India. The film also stars Sonam Kapoor and Radhika Apte and is bankrolled by his wife Twinkle Khanna and KriArj Entertainment. The movie released in India and Russia simultaneously on February 9, 2018. PadMan has opened to mixed reviews from critics and viewers alike.
