Are you a big fan of movies and watching stuff on the big screen? Politicians are still making crazy promises, our cities are getting smogged up, people might break up, you might drift away from your friends, your boss might go all crazy on you, but thank god for the movies where for at least two hours you will forget everything and go on a crazy ride. That’s if the movie has been made well, because nobody likes pulling out at the wrong time, if you know what I mean!
2018 was so packed at the movies - we had some big names like Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan and Aamir Khan going down in terms of numbers, but there were surprises like Badhaai Ho and Pataakha that were more talked about.
So what can you expect at the movies in 2019?
Multi-starrers have always been big draws in Bollywood, but some have also tanked miserably. But here’s something to watch out for - Kalank stars Varun Dhawan, Alia Bhatt, Sonakshi Sinha, Kunal Kemmu, Madhuri Dixit and Sanjay Dutt. It’s going to be out in April this year, and is going to mn be a period drama. Usually when they say period drama the only thing that truly lives up to that tag is the music. One thing that promises to be worth it in Kalank though, is that Madhuri Dixit plays a courtesan, and when she did that in Devdas, it meant a lot of her dancing. So no matter what doesn’t work with this movie, we know one thing that definitely will. Also, Alia and Varun have been in a lot of movies together and they have this really nice chemistry and camaraderie, so maybe good performances from them as well.
We’ve had a few decades of Bollywood so the biggest challenge right now for films is that they are always compared to a previous film that came out. But there’s one movie that’s gonna be out this year, and we’ve never seen anything like it - Gully Boy!
You must’ve seen the trailer - it’s got incredible music - because it is so true to what the premise of the story is - the rise of a rapper from the chawls to the studio - and this is as real as it gets - Ranveer Singh doing rap bits himself - otherwise we’re so used to our Bollywood heroes lipsyncing. Divine, the rapper, also has a huge role to play in the making of this film so it’s amazing how Bollywood is branching out and not only giving us tried and tested music! Gully Boy, starring Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt, it’s going to be out soon in February.
Student of the Year 2
Apart from hosting controversial TV shows and issuing snarky comments, Karan Johar also prides himself on launching people in Bollywood. When he isn’t doing that, he is making reboots or hugely dramatical movies - like Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Student of the Year. And he’s gonna be back again, this time with Tiger Shroff, Tara Sutaria and and Ananya Panday in Student of the Year 2. Is this just a cross between Student of the Year One, and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai?
But mostly because Tiger Shroff is in it, you can expect a twist because it’s not just a romantic drama, it is a romantic dance drama. Maybe that means this will be a combination of Student of the Year, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai AND ABCD! The only way we’ll know if when the movie is out so we’ll wait for that.
Whether you see the moon or not on Eid, Salman Khan will make sure you have a movie of his to see. And just like every year, his gift to you this year is a movie called Bharat. They’re trying to do some clever wordplay with that, it could work as both Bharat and Bhaarath. It’s not gonna be the first patriotic film we’ve seen in the last few months. So is Salman Khan’s movie going to be a jingoistic over the top patriotic film? Or something about one man’s perspective sort of like Swades? We’ll see, although we know from Salman Khan’s history of movies that regular is not something he does very easily. Priyanka Chopra set some tongues wagging because just before she was supposed to shoot her scenes for this film, she decided to leave the project, and whom did they find to do those parts instead? Bhai’s ex-flame Katrina Kaif. So he still gives you something to talk about.
Could you ever have enough of Superhero movies? Marvel Studios is all set to release Captain Marvel in a few weeks’ time, and it’s the 21st film in the Marvel cinematic universe. Brie Larson is going to be playing Carol Danvers a.k.a Captain Marvel, and it’s also got Samuel L Jackson and Jude Law in it. Technically, this was the first female-led superhero film from Marvel because they planned on making this way back in 2013 - that’s when the work on this began. They had been considering a movie with a strong female protagonist, and Marvel had to pick amongst Pepper Potts, Black Widow, or Peggy Carter. But then they went with Captain Marvel because it had a lot of scope for an origin story. The story is set in the year 1995, so the soundtrack of the film is going to reflect that.
Spider-man: Far from home
What happens when a superhero wants to go on a trip with his friends? Trouble, obviously, or they wouldn’t have the story for a movie! Spiderman: Far from home is going to be the 23rd movie from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it’s going to be out later this year. Tom Holland comes back on screen as your friendly neighborhood superhero, and Samuel L Jackson is in this as well - playing Nick Fury. Sony and Marvel had already decided that the Spiderman movies would be made in a Harry Potter-like fashion - meaning each sequel would be the story of the successive school year of Peter Parker. So in this, he goes on a school trip to Europe and meets new bad guys and there’s a lot of action promised in the teaser - he still has to save the world when he’s on holiday - the kid can’t catch a break!
The Lion King
Disney decided you had to cry again, so they’re remaking the Lion King, and you’re going to watch Mufasa in high definition, so you’re going to want to keep some tissues handy.
Whether anybody is a fan of movies or not, it’s very very likely that they’ve still watched the Lion King. And this time Disney has gone all out - they have an incredible voice cast!
Donald Glover - who was in Community, the series, and makes music videos under the pseudonym Childish Gambino, voices Simba.
Seth Rogen is Pumbaa, and Billy Eichner voices Timon.
And the character of Nala, Simba’s love interest? The queen bee - Beyonce!
Hans Zimmer made the soundtrack for the original in 1994 and he returns this time, Elton John will re-work the songs he made for the original, and Beyonce and him are also going to work on a new track for the end-credits!
The remakes of Queen
The highlight of 2014 for Indian cinema, hands down, was Kangana Ranaut’s Queen. Now a good five years later, we’re gonna see it release in the South - simultaneously in four different languages, with four different leading ladies! The Telugu version is called ‘That is Mahalakshmi’, and Tamannaah Bhatia plays Mahalakshmi, the lead. The Tamil version is called ‘Paris Paris’, and has Kajal Agarwal, the Kannada one is called ‘Butterfly’ and has Parul Yadav in it, and Manjima Mohan plays the lead in the Malayalam version which is called Zam Zam.
Wonder how they managed a foreign schedule with so many people involved, but it just might’ve been fun. We’ll see if they’ve managed to keep it as fresh as the Bollywood one.
Dhanush tweeted the other day and said he’s already begun shooting for Asuran, so that’s another movie you can look forward to in 2019. It’s an action drama film, and is directed by Vetrimaaran.GV Prakash Kumar is going to be making the music for this film, and the movie’s also got Manju Warrier. This is the fourth time Dhanush and Vetrimaaran are collaborating. They’d actually thought of making a sequel to Vada Chennai, but then decided to make Asuran first and then do the sequel.
Nayanthara has been going all out to make movies that are beyond regular, and she’s going to be back on the big screen playing the lead in this movie called Airaa. This is her 63rd movie, but looks like it’s the first time she’ll be playing a double role - you almost won’t recognise her in her second Avatar.
This is a horror film, and is written and directed by KM Sarjun, who made Eccharikai last year, so looks like the plot might be strong. It’s going to be out in both Tamil and Telugu later this year - Airaa featuring Nayanthara in the lead.
The biopics just won’t stop, but there’s going to be one out later this year and it’s really something to look forward to.
It’s the story of India’s first female physician who went to the West to get her degree. She was called Anandi Gopalrao Joshi and her journey is incredible - from being married as a child to going all alone to the West at a time when communication was limited and coming back to make medicine more accessible to women. It’s been directed by Sameer Vidwans, who’s written and directed quite a few Marathi movies, but this one promises to have a great story.
2019 looks really promising. We can have our pick of love stories, action movies, biopics, women kicking ass, some horror, a few superhero movies - we’re spoilt for choice!
