After outlining the achievements of his guests, Karan Johar works the hardest to create meme-worthy and controversy-brewing confessional material. On this podcast we’re going to try and cover some of the many controversies that we’ve seen coming out of Koffee With Karan, from the celebrities sitting on that fancy couch.
Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul
What happens when you put someone who’s trained in cricket fielding, in a situation where they have to field questions that have nothing to do with the game? A disaster - like with Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul. People called Hardik Pandya misogynistic, uncouth, and really badly behaved. Although KL Rahul was trying to pass off as a cool, suave man, Hardik Pandya unfortunately took KL down with him! Controversy is an understatement - it went all the way to the BCCI and action was taken against them. The episode was even taken down after it blew out of proportion but it’s 2019! If it’s online once, it’s available forever.
Kangana Ranaut and nepotism
Karan Johar walked himself into such a tight spot - tighter than his suits. Kangana Ranaut was his guest on Season 5, along with Saif Ali Khan and things were going smoothly until the topic moved to nepotism. Might have been a tad bit uncomfortable for Saif Ali Khan but he sat through it unscathed - all her wrath was directed at KJo. Kangana Ranaut said nepotism definitely existed in the industry, and that Karan Johar was the flag-bearer of nepotism. Everytime someone mentions nepotism, the discussion invariably goes back to this particular episode of Koffee with Karan.
Salman Khan being a virgin
Salman Khan does and says as he please, but people were in for a surprise when Salman Khan said he was a virgin, and that he was waiting for the right person to consummate his marriage with. He’s considered the bad boy of bollywood, so it was difficult to believe. He kept the entertainment quotient high with talk about his father and brothers, but for sure, if he really was a virgin we probably would’ve seen a Bollywood movie made about the oldest hero who made action films, but got no action himself.
Deepika and Sonam discussing Ranbir Kapoor and his boyfriend-ing skills
Deepika Padukone and Ranbir Kapoor were much talked about. She even had his initials tattooed before they broke up. But his first girlfriend in showbiz was Sonam Kapoor, after they debuted together in Saawariya. So when Deepika and Sonam appeared together on an episode, Karan Johar didn’t have to work too hard to steer the conversation in that direction. They compared notes, Sonam said Ranbir had to work on his boyfriend skills, and Deepika implied she’d been cheated on. Ranbir Kapoor was probably looking for a superhit movie script but he got a controversy instead. Maybe next season we’ll see Alia Bhat talking about her ‘ex’ Ranbir Kapoor, because their movie together will be out by then and Bollywood relationships sometimes last as long as their movie together on screen.
Anurag Kashyap’s dig at Kareena Kapoor Khan
Anurag Kashyap is known not to mince words. And Kareena Kapoor Khan on the other hand, is a total diva! If it doesn’t concern her, it doesn’t deserve her attention. And although KJo knows it’s not nice to talk about people behind their back, he saves it as the juiciest bit of his show. He asked Anurag Kashyap for his opinion of Kareena Kapoor. And Anurag said, ‘the next time someone asks her to be in a movie, maybe she should ask what the movie is about, and not who is in it’. Bollywood tiffs!
Mahesh Bhatt saying Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Kajol were overrated
Mahesh Bhatt makes sure his movies have a very strong emotional connect, and that the music is great too. On the other end of the spectrum is the man who likes opulence and grand sets and elaborate costumes - Sanjay Leela Bhansali.
Mahesh Bhatt said he thought Sanjay Leela Bhansali was overrated. We get it, they make completely different kinds of movies and probably can never understand each other. So even if you’re a 70 year old guy, you can still end up saying mean things about another director. He also said Kajol was overrated as an actress. But she’s got other friends in the industry who’ll give her movies so she took no note.
Sonam Kapoor saying not looking good is being associated with being a good actor
We’ve always known Sonam Kapoor’s love for fashion. She’s done some great movies like Neerja and Ek ladki ko dekha toh aisa laga which will be out. But she didn’t always pick the greatest of movies - Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, and the bad adaption of ‘Italian Job’ called Players. On one of the episodes, Sonam said sometimes, being bad looking, gets associated with being a good actor in Bollywood. Everybody hated that comment but they were all probably just thinking it while she said it out loud. It’s Bollywood, we’ll never know what they mean!
Kareena and Priyanka’s tiff about accents
Kareena Kapoor was on Karan Johar’s show, and she said she didn’t understand where Priyanka Chopra got her accent from. Priyanka Chopra - Bollywood’s hottest export to the west! When it was her turn to be on the couch, she said she got her accent, from the same place that Kareena’s boyfriend gets his. And Kareena had started dating the ‘Nawab’ Saif by then. Maybe this TV show brings out the worst in people, because they’ve been said to hang out together at other times. Can’t manage an episode without something snarky!
Kareena saying Sonakshi Sinha’s alternative profession would be a housewife
Kareena Kapoor was in a movie called ‘Ki And Ka’, which wanted to educate Indian audiences about the responsibilities of a home-maker. When she was asked what she thought would be Sonakshi Sinha’s ideal alternative career, on the TV show, Kareena Kapoor very sassily replied that it would be that of a housewife. But everyone was pretty sure she didn’t mean that as a compliment.
Emraan Hashmi saying Aishwarya Rai is plastic and Shraddha Kapoor is plastic
Emraan Hashmi was on this episode of Koffee with Karan, and when he was asked what he thought of Aishwarya Rai, he said he thought she was plastic. She didn’t take it too lightly though, when she was offered a role in the movie Baadshaho a couple of years after that, and she heard Emraan Hashmi was gonna be in the movie, she refused it. But Emraan Hashmi said he only made that comment because he wanted to win the coffee hamper. He also said, on the same episode, that Shraddha Kapoor should eat something. But she’s quite a sport and she didn’t make too much of it. They even went on to work together in a song for the movie ‘Ungli’.
This TV show is what it is, because of the controversies, and the more seasons there are, the harder they’re going to try to up their game. So entertained, you shall be. This is Justalkin brought to you by in.com.
