The Bollywood community has come out in support of Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Deepika Padukone, who have been threatened by multiple fringe groups. Bhansali’s latest film Padmavati has received a lot of flak from these groups for allegedly distorting a part of Indian history. However, we’ve got one actress, who refused to back Deepika.
According to The Quint, Shabana Azmi initiated a petition to the Prime Minister and got it signed by the leading stars of the film industry in a bid to seek protection for Deepika. It turns out that Queen star Kangana Ranaut refused to support Deepika at a time when the actress is facing physical threats for playing the role of Padmavati in Bhansali’s upcoming film.
“Kangana refused point-blank. She said an outright no to signing the Deepika Bachao petition, much to Shabana’s shock and annoyance,” said a source for the Quint.
Actors who signed the petition include Hema Malini, Jaya Bachchan, Kareena Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Vidya Balan, Anushka Sharma, Priyanka Chopra, Parineeti Chopra, Sonakshi Sinha and a couple of others.
For those who aren’t aware, Kangana and Deepika don’t share a good relationship and that goes back to 2014. Deepika had reportedly dedicated one of her awards won for Happy New Year to Kangana’s performance in the hit film, Queen. This annoyed Kangana who felt that Deepika could have directly appreciated her performance.
What’s more, when Kangana was entangled in an infamous legal battle against Hrithik Roshan, no one from Bollywood stood by her side. However, there were many who sided with Hrithik.
Interestingly, Kangana too is all set to portray a historical character in her upcoming film titled Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi. The film also stars Deepika’s former boyfriend Nihaar Pandya.
