Kapil Sharma may be a man of humour but he sure can be serious when time demands him to be. The comedian became the latest celebrity to join the list of supporters for Padmavati from Bollywood. In an event in Delhi on Monday, he condemned all threats against Deepika and voiced concern for her saying, we all live in a democratic country.
“That’s completely wrong. It’s a democratic country, you can keep your point of view. But you cannot chop off someone’s head. At one moment, you are saying Deepika Padukone has made the country proud, you talk about women empowerment… I am sure you (pointing towards the journalists) would have got hurt too. Everyone is hurt because of these statements,” said Sharma.
Sharma’s support comes at a time when Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmavati is embroiling in controversy. Several right wing organizations such as Karni Sena and national leaders from BJP have opposed the film and threatened to burn the threatres based on allegations of the film distorting history. While the movie is awaiting clearance from CBFC, its makers have deferred the film’s release till further notice. CBFC seems to be the final authority on which everyone in the industry is pinning their hope on.
“As far as release of the film is concerned, CBFC should see it (the film). If they find something objectionable, they are a government department. Rest, the threats are wrong,” said Sharma.Sharma was attending an event to publicise his upcoming film Firangi which is slated for a December 1 release, the same day as Padmavati before its release got postponed.
