Even though Gully Boy has a few weeks before it hits the theatres, it is safe to say that not many Bollywood filmmakers have chosen street rappers of Mumbai as a film's subject. That way, Zoya Akhtar's film is a winner already. Zoya along with her actors not only did an extensive research but also involved legit rappers in the process to make it more authentic. Ranveer and Alia's Gully Boy is turning out to be not just a film on rappers but a broader picture of the socio-economic context.
Meanwhile, Mere Gully Mein, a new track from the film is out. Well, not exactly a new track because it happens to be a recreated version of Naezy and Divine's song with the same name. While comparing the two tracks, it would be fair to say that the original song's essence has been kept intact. They both open with a telephonic conversation between the two counterparts. Take note when they mention 'Bombay Sattar' (Mumbai 70). Have you yet noticed how across Mumbai, street walls have been painted with an 'Apna Time Aayega' slogan, along with the area's pin code?
While the lyrics remain the same, Ranveer has lent his voice for the Gully Boy version. His track is shot across a Mumbai slum, catching a handful of moments of participation and a joyful togetherness. Naezy and Divine's track also has them riding a bike across a road while Divine holds a trophy.
Both the tracks will compel you to look at life through a perspective you are not familiar to. "Pure shehar ki awaaz mere gully mein/ Pray Aarthi ya Namaz
meri gully mein," it says, throwing light on how, on the so-called less privileged areas, no religion, occupation or status is a barrier and every scope of celebration is grabbed and made lit. "Mere gully mein hai ghar/ chote chote lekin zara dekho/ dil mein hai jagah beshumaar". That sums the spirit of life the track tries to uphold!
However, Ranveer's presence in the new song will definitely bring a new splash of attention to the old track as well. Ranveer hasn't been shying away from rapping live either, these days. Right now, we look forward to witnessing to a joint live performance by Ranveer, Naezy and Divine. Don't you think that will be totally kickass?
