It is common knowledge now that Rajkumar Hirani has been accused by an assistant director for sexually abusing her over 6 months last year. Bollywood celebs have been rather silent about this case given that many spoke up during the peak of the movement in 2018. In fact, it was only a few days ago that Vidhu Vinod Chopra, the man who has produced almost all of Hirani's directorials, too opted to keep mum on the issue. Sonam Kapoor is currently busy with the promotions of her movie Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga and last year she even starred in Hirani’s Sanju. At a media interaction on Wednesday, the actress was asked about the allegations against Hirani. The actress played it safe saying she thinks she needs to reserve the judgement on this.
Sonam has been a rather vocal actor from the fraternity and expressed her opinions quite openly when the #MeToo movement was taking shape in October and November last year. So why so reserved now? “Honestly, I am a huge supporter of the #MeToo movement. There are two things that I can say about this. Number one, this is not the right platform because this film (Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga) is as important or may be more important than this whole movement. The second thing is, I know Raju Hirani very well, I have known him for many many years, I have worked with him and I have huge respect for him as a man and a filmmaker. So, I think we all should reserve judgement and be very responsible before we say anything more on this subject because we don’t need to derail this movement, this movement is so important... So, do proper research. What has actually happened and understand what is happening before you pass judgment,” the actress said.
Sonam latest film seems to be the reason the actress isn't saying too much on the allegations against Hirani. “I promise you after this film (Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga) releases, I will have something to say, but right now things are not clear. It will derail the movement completely. I always want to believe a woman but suppose by chance if it is not true, you know how bad it will be for the movement especially because it is someone like Raju Hirani... See with Tanushree Dutta there was a lot of truth in the article, there was a lot of research done and a lot of people came forward, so you understand where it is coming from. But over here I think we need to reserve judgement. I want to believe every woman, honestly, I am like pro-woman all the way. I don’t believe in sitting on the fence. So, I will take my side when I have to,” she added.
