Rajkummar Rao is on cloud nine. He bagged the Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor trophies at the Star Screen Awards 2017. To make matters more exciting, his film Newton is India’s official selection for the Oscars this year. To top it off, Rao recently tweeted that he is now working for an “out-of-the-box, raucous horror-comedy!” co-starring actress Shraddha Kapoor.
Super excited to be part of out-of-the-box, raucous horror-comedy! With the super amazing @ShraddhaKapoor. Collaborating with my awesome producer #Dinoo @MaddockFilms, the coolest & quirky duo Raj & DK @krishdk & national award-winning @amarkaushik. Can’t wait to begin.— Rajkummar Rao (@RajkummarRao) December 6, 2017
Shraddha also took to twitter to announce the news.
While he didn’t reveal the name of the film, he will be working with Maddock Films, Krishna DK and Amar Kaushik. This is great news for Rajkummar as he is now moving on to work with Bollywood’s A-listers like Shraddha Kapoor. Raj & DK have earlier directed films like A Gentleman (2017), Go Goa Gone (2013) and Shor in the City (2011) amongst others.
The horror comedy genre seems to be playing well for Bollywood. Take a look at Golmaal Again. The Rohit Shetty-Ajay Devgn film amassed more than Rs 205 crore at the box office. According to Forbes, it marched on to the record books as the 10th highest earning domestic release in Bollywood history.
Though horror comedies are not very common in Bollywood, we did have Go Goa Gone, Bhool Bhulaiya and Great Grand Masti. However, they were not complete horror comedies except for Great Grand Masti, which unfortunately suffered a lot at the box office. But the success of Golmaal Again proves that there is a market for horror comedies as well.
Rajkummar made a series of films this year. Bareilly Ki Barfi became a critical and commercial success along with Newton. However, he also made Shaadi Mein Zaroor Aana which did not make it big at the box office. He has completed seven years in the film industry and in this short time Rao has won the National Film Award for Best Actor for his work in 2013’s Shahid. It seems Rajkummar Rao has had a wonderful 2017 and with this new announcement, it seems like he’s preparing for an even better 2018.
