The stories around Ayan Mukherjee directed Brahmastra are slowly but surely building up. The latest detail on the project that stars Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt and Amitabh Bachchan says that it will be made on a whopping budget of 150 crore. Now that’s both good news and bad. Good because it’s the kind of film that requires that kind of production value and it good to see that Dharma production is pulling no punches.
The film, a mid-day reports says, will be shot in 2D and will be later converted into 3D. In an interview with the publication, Chairman and Global CEO of Prime Focus said, “We aspire to create something homegrown that can match Hollywood standards. We can't be penny-pinching with the scale. Hollywood has moved from dramas and rom-coms to big scale films, which makes more money eventually. India too is getting there.”
Good to hear really but Ranbir Kapoor films with huge budgets haven’t worked lately at the box office. Bombay Velvet directed by Anurag Kashyap, which also started Dharma productions Boss Karan Johar was made on a huge budget of Rs 84 Crore. The film, however, made a little over 24 crores at the box office and remains one of the epic disasters in his career. The more recent Jagga Jasoos, a film that Kapoor had also produced, was reportedly made on a budget of 131 crores and managed only 84 crores at the box office.
Having said that Dharma was also the presenters of Bahubali and look what happened to that one. It remains one of the highest grossing films of all times and perhaps Johar knows how to utilises the star power of RANBIR Kapoor who undoubtedly remains one of the finest actors in the current crop of stars. Kapoor has also delivered hits like Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani and Ae Dil Hai Mushkil for the banner in the past.
Coming back to the latest project, a lot of prep has gone into the planning of Brahmastra. The film which was tentatively titled Dragon will showcase Kapoor’s character with pyrokinetic abilities. Simply put he will probably shoot great balls of fire.
Another high point of the film is the casting. This is the first time that Alia Bhatt and Ranbir are starring in a film together. The two made an appearance at the Durga puja pandals in Mumbai this year and we have to say that we liked what we saw. So there’s nothing to be pessimistic about with this one. The film has been planned as a trilogy with the first film releasing on 15 August 2019.
