January 26, 1950 is the day when our motherland got its separate constitution and became an absolute democratic, sovereign and republic nation. We as Indians, take immense pride and joy in celebrating this special day. While our ‘real life’ soldiers leave no stone unturned to fight it out at the border so that we sleep peacefully, our Bollywood actors have had the perfect tributes to their courage, nationalism and honesty. Right from a dedicated Sunny Deol and Sunil Shetty in Border to the perfect revenge-seeker Saif Ali Khan in Phantom, our heroes have time and again, celebrated the Indian Army's spirit with utmost sincerity. On the occasion of the70th Republic day, here are some of the most patriotic films that will not only ignite the fire of nationalism in you but will also make you shed a tear or two.
When we think of the Indian Army, we automatically think of Border! A JP Dutta directorial that revolves around a group of soldiers who are ready to protect their country at any cost. It is one of the rare Bollywood films that depict the struggles and traumas our soldiers go through. It’s hard-hitting dialogues and heart-touching songs have always managed to strike a chord among its viewers. Sunny Deol, Sunil Shetty and Akshaye Khanna were at their action best in this one.
It wouldn't be wrong to call this as one of Shah Rukh Khan’s best till date. The plot revolved around a successful Indian working for NASA who then rediscovers his roots during a vacation in India. During his trip, he falls in love with his motherland all over again. A film that gives an insight into the rural parts of India, its lifestyle. Also, what adds to our pride is the fact that as of now, Swades is the only Indian film to be shot in NASA.
This Akshay Kumar starrer is about an Indian businessman in Kuwait, who thinks he is a Kuwaiti. However, when Iraq invades Kuwait, he realizes the worth of his motherland and makes it a mission to rescue all the 170000 Indian stuck in the ordeal. With not a single dull moment throughout the screenplay, its climax is sure to give you goosebumps.
This is Hrithik Roshan’s underrated piece of work. Lakshya is not based on Kargil, but rather a backdrop to show Karan’s transformation from an irresponsible and misguided boy to a focused army man.
Alia Bhatt's Raazi does what a very few ‘patriotic’ films in Bollywood manage to do. She pulls off the tight script with her amazing acting. Alia’s portrayal of Sehmat deserves all the praises, she manages to get into the skin of the character so comfortably that you can feel the pain she is emoting.
#6 Chak De India
One of the most exceptional sports film to be made in Bollywood, that puts through the journey of 15 girls struggle to glory. Shah Rukh Khan as coach Kabir Khan and his dedication and love for his sport, his people and his country is applaud-worthy. You won’t mind crying during the climax.
#7 Parmanu: The Story of Pokhran
Parmanu is a film based on a true incident of nuclear testing in India. It showed how India became a nuclear power in arms and stood strong among the few other nuclear-based countries. There are thrills, drama, action and emotion. Undoubtedly, John Abraham’s one of the best work till date.
#8 URI: The Surgical Strike
When we talk of patriotism, how can we miss this one? Based on the Indian Army’s surgical strike, this film is Aditya Dhar’s tribute to our soldiers who put their life at risk and neutralize the terrorists and it does manage to do justice to their glory. Well, your josh after watching this one will definitely go HIGH!
#9 Rang De Basanti
This Aamir Khan, Sharman Joshi, Kunal Kapoor, Siddharth Narayan starrer is, undoubtedly, one of the best tribute to the concept of patriotism. A film that rightly depicts what this country needs right now. Revolving around a group of young people whose vision is to bring about positive change, unfortunately, it all goes in vain. All thanks to the super corrupt political system. The message of this film is loud and clear – be the change you want to see.
Have you ever imagined how perfect revenge looks like? No? This movie certainly shows it. The amazing Saif Ali Khan and Katrina Kaif team up to finish the terrorists in their own country, like a boss! The suspense of this film is gripping and it is sure to keep you on the edge of your seat.
