Bollywood actress Kalki Koechlin and Sumeet Vyas of Permanent Roommates fame will soon be seen together on the big screen in Rakhee Sandilya’s directorial debut ‘Ribbon’. The trailer of the film promises a simple narrative. A story about an urban couple who faces an untimely pregnancy has already gained considerable traction. The couple is shown facing day to day challenges of a career, a child and ensuing responsibilities.
Kalki’s character Shahran is unexpectedly pregnant and is opposed to the idea of having a child but she eventually decides to have one after Karan Mehta played by Vyas convinces her. The trailer may have revealed a lot given that it unveils major pivotal points in the story line.
With the similar story revisited multiple times in Bollywood, it awaits to be seen what new element Ribbon will bring to the table. The film seems unconventional but with a conventional story telling style. But as great film theorists believe, not only the story but how you narrate it makes a difference.
The director has ensured the settings are realistic and as relatable as possible. Perhaps, this decision was keeping in mind the major chunk of audience who can afford to see films in theatres which shall result in increased revenues. However, following the pregnancy thread, it might not appeal to the masses.
The plot is coincidentally very similar to the famous web series ‘Permanent Roommates: Season 2’ which stars Sumeet Vyas as lead. This TVF (The Viral Fever) web series was, again, about an urban couple which comes across an untimely pregnancy. Battling through the challenges, the couple ultimately decides to have the baby.
Ribbon also talks about the challenges Kalki’s character faces at her workplace due to her pregnancy. The daily challenges shown in the trailer are not only painfully relatable but the filmmaker also attempts at putting across a strong message. The film is set to release on 3rd of November.
