Sexual abuse in the Hindi film industry is a much-hushed subject as its victims refuse to speak about. Daisy Irani, Bollywood 's best-known child actor from 1950s has come out and revealed that she was raped and abused at the peak of her stardom. In an interview with Mumbai Mirror, the actress, who is better known as the maternal aunt of Farhan Akhtar and Farah Khan, said she was raped by a family acquaintance and guardian when she was merely six-years-old.
Recounting the trauma, Irani told Mirror, "The man who did this was supposed to be my guardian. He accompanied me to a film shoot (Hum Panchhi Ek Dal Ke) in Madras. One night in the hotel room he violated me, hit me with a belt and warned me that he would kill me if I ever told anyone about what had happened.”
The accused in question is Nazar, a man said to be related to the iconic singer Zohrabai Ambalewaali. While he is no more, he is said to have had strong contacts within the industry. Irani added that she chose such a time as this to speak out as she is concerned for the child actors working in film and TV industry these days.
This comes at a time when Bollywood is increasingly joining the MeToo movement that is revealing heart-wrenching stories worldwide. Just a month ago, Bollywood veteran actor Jeetendra was alleged of physically assaulting his cousin in a hotel. The 75-year-old Bollywood veteran has been booked by the Shimla Police on charges of molestation.
