The major reason that Bollywood delivered such high on content movies, which were not only loved by critics but were also made a big impact at the box office can be credited to the emergence of several digital platforms. It was the need of the hour for the movie industry to pull up their socks and give audience nothing less than a good movie watching experience.
Unlike previous years, the content produced by OTT platforms headlined by Netflix and Amazon Prime made waves on the social media and amongst the audience. Last year, we saw some interesting and entertaining web series like Inside Edge starring Vivek Oberoi and Richa Chadha, Bose Dead or Live starring Rajkumar Rao etc. And this year these digital platforms went for a kill with several star-studded web shows and movies.
Let’s take a look at 5 best web series and movies that you should watch right away:
#1 Sacred Games
As mentioned above, there have been many web-series in the past too, but it was Saif Ali Khan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui starrer Netflix’s first original Hindi web series Sacred Games that introduced the audience to the power of content in the digital space. Directed by Vikramaditya Motwane and Anurag Kashyap, the season one of Sacred Games was such a huge success that it inspired endless memes and merchandise. This is one show that grabbed audience’s fancy even more than many big-ticket films. And the fact that it starred mainstream movie stars like Saif Ali Khan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Radhika Apte acted as the icing on the cake. If you haven’t watched it yet, you don’t know what you are missing out.
Another big-ticket web series came from Amazon Prime Videos. Featuring an ensemble of great performers headlined by Pankaj Tripathi, Mirzapur is a binge-worthy show because of its interesting narrative, great performances, colourful yet fantastic dialogues and the shock value. From Ali Fazal, Vikrant Massey, Shriya Pilgaonkar, Shweta Tripathi, Kulbhushan Kharbanda to Rasika Dugal everyone put up a great show but the highlight was the powerful act by Divyendu Sharma.
Unlike Sacred Games and Mirzapur, Breathe was more of an intimate affair that revolved around a father who can go to any length to save his terminally ill son and a washed-up cop who is dealing with his own demons. R Madhavan and Amit Sadh nailed it as the two men at each end of a spectrum. Barring a weak finale, Breathe will keep you on the edge of your seat for the most part. If not for anything watch it for R Madhavan’s brutal act and Amit Sadh’s career best performance.
The second Netflix original after Sacred Games, Ghoul featured Radhika Apte in the lead and is one of its kind horror thrillers. The plot is about a futuristic dystopian world which also takes a dig of sorts at the current political scenario in our country. However, you may need a little patience as it takes some time for the plot buildup.
This was not originally meant to be a digital movie and was supposed to release in theatres. But after endless delays, it finally found a home on Zee 5. Starring Emraan Hashmi in the lead, Tigers is an international film directed by Danis Tanovich, whose known of helming Oscar-winning film No Man’s Land. This true tale of Pakistani whistleblower who took on a multinational corporation and lost everything in the process is powerful, disturbing and inspiring. Also, the screenplay is interesting. Emraan Hashmi has delivered a solid performance.
