Filmmaker Kalpana Lajmi of 'Rudali', 'Darmiyaan' and 'Daman' fame, was admitted to a hospital early on Tuesday. She had been battling kidney cancer for a while when she was rushed to suburban hospital following complaints of weakness. Her deteriorating health made doctors rush her to the ICU. While doctors assured she will be released from the hospital after a few days, she was healthy enough to talk this morning.
"Today morning my heart rate dropped and I felt uneasy. I am a kidney patient and both my kidneys are not functioning properly," Kalpana said in a statement to PTI.
The director was attending her partner’s death anniversary when she started feeling uneasy. "Yesterday was my partner's (Bhupen Hazarika) death anniversary so I went all the way to Vashi (Navi Mumbai) to attend the program. That must have taken a toll on me. So today when I woke up, I felt very weak. I was then taken to the ICU," she added.
Lajmi who was diagonized with malignant tumour in her kidney, lost her Assamese singer-partner in 2011. She struggles with long-term treatment. Her struggles however, have been slightly lessened with support from the industry with Salman Khan, Alia Bhatt, Karan Johar and others from the film industry coming forward to help her financially.
"They all have helped me, from Aamir Khan, Indian Film & Television Directors' Association, Rohit Shetty, Salman Khan, Karan Johar, Alia Bhatt, Soni Razdan, Neena Gupta. All of them have come forward and helped me during my worst. It is a financially draining and a continous lifelong process," said Lajmi.We wish her a speedy recovery.
