Following reports of the decision to not bring back James Gunn as the director of Guardians of the Galaxy, Dave Bautista, who plays the role of Drax the Destroyer, hit out at Disney. This comes after the lead cast of the film franchise signed an open letter in support of the filmmaker.
Bautista was one of the first members of the cast to speak against Disney when they fired Gunn after his decade-old tweets surfaced online thanks to an alt-right website. When asked about what he’d do if Gunn was not restored to the film, Bautista tweeted that he’ll do what he is legally obligated to do. He also added that Guardians of the Galaxy without Gunn is not something that he signed up for. The former wrestler also added that it is ‘nauseating’ to work for Disney.
I will do what Im legally obligated to do but @Guardians without @JamesGunn is not what I signed up for. GOTG w/o @JamesGunn just isn’t GOTG. Its also pretty nauseating to work for someone who’d empower a smear campaign by fascists #cybernazis . That’s just how I feel https://t.co/Ym4FwruVDu— Dave Bautista (@DaveBautista) August 5, 2018
The Walt Disney Studio has faced a lot of flak since their decision to omit Gunn after his tweets on pedophilia and rape were discovered. Gunn had apologised for the tweets prior to his employment with Disney for the first GOTG film in 2012. The studio claimed that they did not know about the tweets until they resurfaced recently.
The GOTG cast including Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, and Michael Rooker supported Gunn but Disney is not ready to budge from their decision. As of now, there’s no word on who will replace Gunn though there are many who would like to see a female director.
