Padmaavat star Ranveer Singh may have crossed over to the 300 crore club now but his launch in Bollywood was a long awaited one. While he got to make his debut opposite Anushka Sharma in Band Baaja Barat, it did not come without insecurities of his non-hero look. The star shared his experience with movie critic Rajeev Masand at the News 18 Rising India Summit.
“When I got that call and I realised that it was all legit, I knew that this was the opportunity. I preserved my face so to speak. I did not do music videos, I did not become a VJ. There were many options from modeling, acting, ads, small parts. There were films that actually went on to be made and did reasonably well that I actually turned down. Producers were like kid you are crazy,” said the star on turning down roles before his big debut.
But just getting the role was not enough for him. “I got a massive launch. My producer and mentor Aditya Chopra was like look at your face, I can’t sell this face on a poster. So my son, you will have to act really well if you want people to like you. He said you are not conventionally good looking.”
On the professional front, Ranveer is currently shooting for Zoya Akhtar’s Gully Boys where he stars alongside Alia Bhatt. He is also prepping for Rohit Shetty’s Simmba where he will be seen as a policeman for the first time.
