The makers of Mission: Impossible- Fallout just released the trailer starring Tom Cruise. But the USP of the film is its iconic theme song. The theme song was originally composed by Lalo Schifrin for Mission: Impossible television series. This composition which instantly got ingrained in the popular culture is known to be his best composition amongst his decades of work.
The first film in the franchise came out in 1996 directed by Brian De Palma. The original music was composed by Danny Elfman who composed the theme song closely to Schifrin’s original timeless theme but giving it an edge and a modern touch. But this was furthered by U2 band members Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen, Jr. who gave it a techno remix.
While they were able to play around with the original composition without ruining it, but same can’t be said for the music of Mission: Impossible 2 which opened to an electric-guitar heavy sound. If this wasn’t enough, Limp Bizkit repurposed the theme song into Go knows what! Nonetheless, Hans Zimmer’s score for Mission: Impossible 2 is still considered the best.
Michael Giacchino took over for JJ Abrams’ Mission: Impossible 3 and he not only paid homage to original Schifrin theme but also managed to make it sound exciting and new. He perfectly balanced the old and the new. He drags the opening of the song for a few seconds with bold percussions until he finally hits it off. He returned for Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol with mostly Russian-inspired feel to the score while he further explores the original composition.
For Christopher McQuarrie Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation, Joe Kraemer was brought on-board. For this installment of the franchise, Kraemer went full retro taking inspiration from the ‘60s show. He used rare acoustic sounds to coax new sounds. For the sixth installment, Mission: Impossible- Fallout Kraemer returned with a mix of Imagine Dragon’s Friction and orchestrated theme song to keep the sound up-to-date and yet retain the original score.
So what is your favourite version of Mission: Impossible theme song?
