After capturing the pain of unrequited love in award-winning heartbreak album 21, Adele appeared to be looking out onto a future of happiness when she tied the knot with husband Simon Konecki in 2016. Yet the couple stunned fans over the weekend by announcing they are set to divorce after eight years together.
Adele's last record 25 had been billed as her 'make-up album' after finding love with Simon in 2011, but following news of their break-up fans have been giving the album another listen and claim to be picking out subtle warning signs trouble was brewing. The eighth track on the album, Love in The Dark, paints the story of a tumultuous relationship struggling to survive.
Included in the bleak lyrics, is the line, "This is never ending, we have been here before. But I can't stay this time cause I don't love you anymore." While in the chorus Adele croons, "I can't love you in the dark. It feels like we're oceans apart. There is so much space between us. Baby, we're already defeated."
While in Water Under the Bridge, the fourth song to be released from 25, Adele laments the struggle of trying to get the man she's fallen for to commit. She sings, "It's so cold out here in your wilderness. I want you to be my keeper. But not if you are so reckless." In the chorus she continues, "If you're gonna let me down, let me down gently. Don't pretend that you don't want me."
Adele previously confirmed the single was about her relationship with Simon. She said, "It was sort of about a relationship suddenly getting really, really serious, and then getting a bit frightened by it, and then realizing that 'I think this must be right.'"
The album closes with piano ballad All I Ask, that portrays two lovers deciding the best way to part ways. "If this is my last night with you hold me like I'm more than just a friend. Give me a memory I can use," asks Adele. "What if I never love again?" she sings in the closing bars of the track that was co-written with Bruno Mars.
Over the weekend it was reported how Adele and her husband Simon had split shortly before Christmas after a period of drifting apart. Adele, 30, was said to have been spending more and more time with celeb pals in America while Simon, 44, preferred to be closer to friends and family in England.
A source told The Mirror, "Adele had found an exciting new social circle in LA and New York of strong Hollywood women who loved her for her humour and down to earth ways. Jennifer especially bonded with Adele and in the last 15 months, they have become great mates. Adele just became settled in that life, while all the girls too doted on Angelo."
“Simon’s charity business was booming and it meant he was travelling across the globe overseeing projects for weeks on end. His passion for his cause and his success just took him away from his wife," the source said.
“Adele loves the climate of LA. Last winter she got so fed up with the cold she came over to hang out in California. They had an unconventional relationship that had worked for so long. In the end, they were barely together and so called it quits,” the source added.
A spokesman for the couple said, “They are committed to raising their son together lovingly. As always they ask for privacy. There will be no further comment.”
