For the upcoming Ben is Back, writer-director Peter Hedges and his son Lucas Hedges have united. But that wasn't exactly the plan when Peter started writing the film. The character of a 19-year-old drug addict who is trying to recover and is taking his mother's help in the process could be essayed by a number of young actors, thought Peter. His son wasn't on the list. But, as and when he roped in Julia Roberts to play the mother, she insisted on bringing Lucas on board for the same.
“I assumed reading a Peter Hedges screenplay that this great part for a young man, that was a killer part, was a fait accompli. I pictured Lucas, and he was brilliant in my mind’s eye, as I knew he would be," Roberts said, at the film's New York premiere. Senior Hedges chuckled when he recalled how the actor wouldn't agree to any other actor's name. “I knew I had a problem when I met with Julia, and she wouldn’t listen to any of my ideas for who could play Ben. She said, ‘I want Lucas to do the movie.’ We talked through it, so I was thrilled when he finally decided to read the script," he told Variety.
Throughout 2018, Lucas has worked with some of Hollywood's biggest names, including Nicole Kidman and Kenneth Lonergan. Ben is Back had to be the cherry on top. Lucas says his dad is rather humble and doesn't take credit of being remarkable. "He wrote an unbelievable script, and he’s also at the end of the day, the only reason why I do this. I would have come along to it, but Julia accelerated the process," he said. The film is set to release on 14th December 2018.
