The New Mutants is the new X-Men Spin-off film from Marvel Universe and is set to hit the theaters on April 13, 2018. This out-and-out horror movie isn’t a usual marvel superhero lineup. As per the 1982 comic book series, the New Mutants are a group of super teenagers, basically, the 1st generation of X-men trained under Professor Charles Xavier. But the film is a tonal crossover, based on five teenagers with fantastic powers band together to escape a secret medical facility, which is a theme drawn from ‘The Demon Bear Saga,’ an iconic story-line that ran in The New Mutants #18-20 in 1984 successfully. But the movie seems to be a mixture of Stephen King and Marvel Universe.
The New Mutants is written by Josh Boone and Knate Lee with Boone taking over the director’s seat as well. The pair is childhood friends and childhood fans of The New Mutants series. Boone, who is quite famous for directing teen-focused movies like Stuck in Love and The Fault in Our Stars will be directing the trilogy of the series.
The cast of The New Mutants cast is very similar to the core cast of the New Mutants in their early comics’ incarnation, consisting of Magik, Wolfsbane, Cannonball, Sunspot, and Mirage. Magik, played by Anya Taylor-Joy, Wolfsbane, or Rahne Sinclair, played by Game of Thrones’ Maisie Williams, Cannonball, a.k.a. Sam Guthrie, played by Charlie Heaton from Stranger Things, Sunspot, or Roberto de Costa, played by Henry Zaga and finally, Mirage, known as Danielle Moonstar and played by Blu Hunt. Characters have been taken from the comics but they possess the power, but there will be no mutant characters, like Professor X or Wolverine, from the other X-Men films appearing in The New Mutants.
While a new and a first-ever spinoff franchise is rising from the Marvel Universal, it will be interesting to see something different emerges from the superhero genre.
