Production for the hit political drama series House of Cards kicked off on Wednesday after being put on hold following the allegations of sexual harassment against lead actor Kevin Spacey. Following the accusations, Netflix severed all ties with the actor and completed scenes were deleted and production was started over. To replace Spacey, Netflix has announced two new actors: Diane Lane and Greg Kinnear for the sixth and final season of the show.
Making a return to the show are Robin Wright, Michael Kelly, Jayne Atkinson, Boris McGiver, Patricia Clarkson, Constance Zimmer, Derek Cecil and Campbell Scott. The final season of House of Cards will have eight episodes – the shortest in the series - and will reportedly focus on Robin Wright’s character. Robin plays the role of Claire Underwood, Spacey’s wife. Though a release date for the television series is not announced yet, it is expected to be before the end of this year.
Meanwhile Netflix did not mention the roles Lane or Kinnear will be playing, except that they’ll be siblings. Both actors are nominees for the Academy Awards. Kinnear was nominated for The Kennedys and Modern Family while
Lane was nominated for Cinema Verite.
According to NYTimes, House of Cards is a landmark for Netflix and gave it a strong entrance to the TV landscape with its debut in 2013. It has since toppled the TV industry. The company has announced that it plans to spend about $8 billion in content for 2018.
House of Cards received 53 Emmy nominations and won seven of them, over its past five seasons.
