It's about time but Marvel is finally going to deliver a major gay character. Avengers: Endgame co-director Joe Russo revealed to Entertainment Weekly's SiriusXM that Marvel Phase 4 will feature an openly gay character. The director was discussing his role as "the first openly gay character in the MCU" movies, whilst making reference to there having been "insinuations about a character's sexuality" otherwise.
When pressed further on who else is gay, Russo said: "We're going to find out." Anthony Russo added: "That's a story for another day." Joe Russo revealed: "You know, there is a gay character coming up in one of their films. I think Kevin [Feige, Marvel Studios chief] will make that announcement, I'm sure, pretty soon." So this is confirmation of a major gay character in the MCU, along with the tease that an existing character is also gay.
We know from previous discussions that Tessa Thompson played Valkyrie as bisexual and there were cut scenes confirming this, along with the same for Black Panther character Okoye. Fans have also clamoured for same-sex pairings such as Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes, and more recently Valkyrie with Captain Marvel/Carol Danvers.
Will one of these be revealed as LGBTQ+?
It was also reported that cosmic epic The Eternals will feature an openly gay superhero, with the comic character Hercules being touted to appear. Avengers: Endgame is in cinemas now.
