From Sherlock Holmes to 007? The latest odds on who will replace Daniel Craig as James Bond following his final turn in Bond 25, have seen a major leap forward for one British actor. Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch has had his odds for the role 007 slashed from a huge 250/1 to 12/1, according to Oddschecker. This would suggest that his 0.4% chance of being the next actor to play the iconic British secret agent has risen to a healthy 7.7% instead.
Despite the shake-up to the running that Cumberbatch's rise brings, he is still a way behind the front runners. Still at the top of the list potential Bond stars sits Bodyguard star Richard Madden, who is the favourite at 3/1. Madden is followed by The Night Manager actor Tom Hiddleston at 4/1 and Idris Elba at 6/1. Other front runners ahead of Cumberbatch are Happy Valley actor James Norton at 13/2, Peaky Blinders star Cillian Murphy at 7/1, with Mad Max himself Tom Hardy at 7/1.
It remains to be seen if Cumberbatch can trump the competition, but it's certainly some better odds for the actor. Craig makes his final appearance as 007 in next year's Bond 25 which will star Rami Malek as the villain that Bond needs to take down, with new additions to the cast including Captain Marvel's Lashana Lynch, Ana de Armas, and Billy Magnussen.
