Russell Simmons: Fresh rape allegations jar the hip-hop star
Hollywood is simply bursting with accusations of sexual misconduct and the latest in this list is hip-hop star, Russell Simmons. Alexia Norton Jones accused Simmons of raping her in a first person account published on Variety. The victim said that in 1990, she and Simmons had gone on a date, following which he invited her to his apartment. “It was such a fast attack,” she told Variety. “He pulled my dress up. I must have said no seven to 10 times.”
Traumatised, she left but claimed that Simmons continued to pursue her, meeting her at social events and even calling her at home. Jones and Simmons shared the same social circles – she is the daughter of Clarence B Jones, a lawyer and confidant for Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. She is also the granddaughter of WW Norton, founder of the publishing house of the same name.
“There was nobody to tell because we had the same friends. I later confided in my therapist. This was my concern, to be honest with you: he didn’t use a condom. I was worried I had exposed myself to a sexually transmitted disease. The other concern was pregnancy. I was freaked out,” she told Variety.
Three decades later, Jones filed a report with the New York Police Department from her residence in Arizona, though the case was outside the jurisdiction of the NYPD. A number of women had accused Simmons of rape or sexual assault.
In a statement to Variety, Simmons denied the accusations made by Jones. “I’m deeply saddened by this story from Alexia. At no time did she share these feelings about her first sexual encounter with me, which took place roughly 28 years ago. I have taken multiple lie detector tests that affirm I never sexually assaulted anyone.”
Given the cases that are pouring in, will Simmons be summoned for his actions?
