Shakira to appear in a Spanish court over tax fraud charges against her
Shakira was accused of tax fraud charges for an amount of 12.5 million euros.
It was last year in the month of December when Colombian Songstress, Shakira was charged for tax evasion by the Spanish prosecutors. The accusations were levied on her after she failed to pay a whopping 12.5 million euros in tax ($14.5M). The prosecutors alleged that the singer didn’t pay taxes in Spain between 2012 and 2014, while she mostly lived in the country with her boyfriend, Gerard Pique. However, she listed her official residence in the tax haven of Panama during those years.
As an update to this case, the pop star has been called by the Spanish court in mid-June to testify. Reportedly, Shakira’s spokesperson stated she will testify as required on June 12 at a court located in Esplugues de Llobregat, the Barcelona suburb where Shakira resides with beau, Spanish soccer player Gerard Pique and their children. The hearing will take place behind closed doors. Her spokesperson further revealed that the singer has now settled all her pending debts with the local tax authorities.

Previously, prosecutors accused Shakira of travelling around the world for professional engagements but most of the time, she lived in Spain. They even wanted her to pay tax in Spain on her worldwide income or they would have considered recommending a court freeze of her assets to that amount. However, the singer denied all the accusations as she felt that she is being used ‘as a scapegoat’ to frighten other taxpayers into coming clean.
