Tom Holland is back as Spider-Man - the roll which made him not only a household name but more famous than his comedian dad, Dominic Holland. The Hollywood superstar spoke to the Sunday Mirror's Notebook magazine about the movie's incredible stunts, chubbing up for the role and the eternal problem of just how Spider-Man goes for a wee...
Notebook: We see Spider-Man has a snazzy new suit…
Tom: The cool black and grey suit, we call the stealth suit. As an actor, it was really interesting to try and figure out how Spider-Man might move and act in such different attire. I also have a red and black suit this time, which is pretty cool. We totally redesigned the helmet underneath, because the one we used on the first film actually bruised and cut my face, which wasn’t ideal!
Notebook: They’re not particularly wearer-friendly those suits, then?
Tom: I did actually request a zip in the suit this time so I could go to the toilet, but that particular request was denied. Maybe on Spider-Man 3, I’ll get to go to the toilet!
Notebook: Did you have to do a lot of hardcore exercise to prep for this movie?
Tom: Yeah, Peter Parker is older and a little fitter than he was in Homecoming, so I had to get in better shape for this one. I ended up putting on quite a bit of weight, so I’m bulkier, I’m a bit thicker and a bit chubbier.
Notebook: How much of what we see of Spider-Man on screen is actually you in the suit?
Tom: If there are no stunts involved, it’s always me. Sometimes the stunts are just too dangerous to let us do them, so we have doubles – but we put a lot more time and effort into designing the stunts and making sure I could do as much as possible.
Notebook: What’s it like to have your own action figure?
Tom: It’s weird, for sure. The first few that they made of me were horrendous, so we worked with them and we made it better. I have one in my living room and I was sitting watching TV and I felt like it was watching me. I was like, ‘This is so weird.’ So I have now turned it away from the television…
